Tutoring Plus of Cambridge, Inc. Tutoring Plus has been providing academic support to Cambridge students for over 40 years. Tutoring Plus was started in 1964, when a group of Cambridge mothers seeking more academic support for their children tapped into a new source - MIT student tutors. Tutoring Plus now offers three Middle School Tutoring Centers, three high school tutoring sites in Cambridge Public Housing, and four math, science and engineering classes for grades 4-8. Our small staff focuses on organizing our many volunteers and families into working for productive academic results, reaching out to meet with students' teachers, and developing additional community partnerships to bring greater resources to our students. Tutoring Plus’ programs are carefully designed around five core values: 1. Academic Success and Self-esteem For a student who is struggling in school, receiving academic support and seeing his or her grades improve play an important role in improving self-esteem. 2. Mentoring The benefits to students who are tutored by adults from the community extend far beyond improved academic performance. Spending one-on-one time with adults helps students model positive behavior and social interactions and develop their self-identity. 3. Multiculturalism Bringing together diverse student and volunteer populations to work toward a common goal -- the students’ academic and personal success -- encourages respect for and understanding of people from different backgrounds and cultures. 4. Collaboration Partnering with schools, community groups, and other organizations to serve our students and their families ensures that we all know them better and meet their needs with all resources that are available. 5. Inclusiveness Parental involvement through interaction and feedback also ensures that Tutoring Plus will continue to improve to more fully meet students needs. Tutoring Plus’ board of directors meets monthly to oversee the development of long-term strategic plans focused on organizational improvement, expansion, and fundraising. The board also ensures the organization’s integrity by keeping Tutoring Plus’ programs aligned with its mission statement. Tutoring Programs Students in our tutoring programs work one-on-one with a tutor, or in small groups, to address educational trouble spots, strengthen study skills, and navigate the academic rigors and social challenges of high school and middle school. High School One-on-One Tutoring The High School One-on-One Tutoring program is for high school students who have expressed an interest in receiving help in one or more academic subjects. Students are matched with tutors based on academic needs, and tutoring pairs work together each week to strengthen the student’s aptitude in specific academic subjects. Our high school program is offered three days a week at three tutoring centers and serves approximately 35 students in grades 9 through 12. Tutoring sessions are offered from October to January and from February to May. Middle School Tutoring Partnering students with a volunteer tutor, the program helps children in middle school develop their academic skills and become stronger, more confident students. Our Middle School Tutoring program runs four days a week at three tutoring centers and serves over 60 students in grades 4 through 8. Tutoring sessions are offered from October to January and from February to May.
