Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Boston The Solomon Schechter Day School offers a comprehensive, challenging curriculum in secular and Judaic studies, presented in an academically nurturing environment in which students learn to think critically and to develop a life-long passion for learning. Our Mission To provide an outstanding education in English and Hebrew that Inspires a love of learning Celebrates the creativity and achievements of our children, and Nurtures lives rooted in Jewish tradition and Torah. Our Vision Our students will become self-confident, compassionate, practicing Jews and committed citizens who are prepared for the academic and social challenges of the modern world, and who are connected to the Jewish people and the land of Israel. The Schechter experience begins with academics. The top quality program in secular and Judaic studies is nationally recognized for its excellence. Learning is disciplines based, and the curriculum changes to reflect the latest best practices in education, so your child receives a solid grounding in math, language arts, science, and social studies. We not only challenge the mind – we nurture the soul. Added to the secular learning is a Judaic studies curriculum that is rich in Hebrew language and concern for the well-being of Israel, the perpetuation of Jewish tradition, and the study of Torah in the context of modern sensibilities of 21st century American Jews. Faculty and staff are nurturing, talented, and creative. Professional development is encouraged, and the school sponsors its own Schechter University which is affiliated with Hebrew College. Three of our teachers received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching Math and Science. We are committed to providing the best education we can to each of our students. Class size is small, averaging 15 students, with a teacher/student ratio of 1:8. Support services staff and classroom teachers work with children of diverse learning styles and strengths by fostering an environment that meets a wide range of needs. The social development and growing self-esteem of each child is as important as academic growth; teamwork and cooperation are valued and modelled at each grade level. The visual and performing arts are a vital component of our educational program. Music, art, dance, and drama are integrated into class activities and showcased at milestone events. Students can participate in choirs and dance troupes that perform at the State House and MIT. Our campuses are completed with indoor and outdoor playing areas, science and computer labs, art rooms, libraries, and spaces for both whole grade activities and small learning groups. Schechter has a fabulous Afterschool Enrichment program that offers Enrichment courses in the arts and academics; an Extended Day neighborhood where children can play with friends, do homework, or engage in a myriad of activities; a sports program for athletes and junior athletes of all levels, with instruction in sports ranging from karate to lacrosse; and a Music Studio with private instruction in instruments and voice and opportunities to play in bands and small ensembles. Physical education program includes schoolday classes for all grades, Sunday Soccer, and interscholastic team sports in soccer, basketball, and baseball/softball for our older students. Schechter has a strong track record of success. Our students score well on standardized tests (this year’s seventh grade scored in the 99th percentile in math on the Educational Record Bureau test) and place in the highest classes in public and private high schools. Our community is inclusive. Although the school is aligned with Conservative Judaism, we respect and welcome families of all levels of observance. Religious observance is egalitarian. Your child will be surrounded by a caring community that demonstrates concern for its members as well as people throughout the world. From classroom tzedakah projects to the Mitzvah Sunday Community Service Day, your child and your family will have many opportunities to model strong values of helping others. When your child joins the Schechter community, it is the beginning of a family journey. Many parents say the warm Schechter family is one of the best aspects of the school. We offer social and parenting programs, activities for families and for adults, and a network of caring people who reach out to others in times of need. There is so much more! Come for a visit. Talk to Schechter families. Our children are engaged in learning, our teachers delight in teaching, and our families take pride in the growth and achievements of their children.
