Basileia Books
Member of Massachusetts&Rhode Island Antiquarian Booksellers
The collection focuses on Christianity and Judaism, and includes the comparative study of these two with other religious traditions. Basileia Books strives to meet the needs and interests of book collectors, scholars, librarians, and leaders in religious and community organizations. Plans are under way for providing services in bibliographic research, language translation, and collection development. Catalogues and thematic magazines appear on a regular basis. The arrival of the Advent season ushered in a new year in Christian liturgy. Over the past year, we have established the core areas of the collection. In the current year, we are developing the cognate areas. New catalogues will appear in Music, Drama, Mathematics, History of Science, Pastoral Counseling, Material Culture, and Gender Studies. We are offering a new catalogue in Liturgy & Worship, Ritual, and Sacramental Theology. The predominant theme is the appropriation of ancient sources in modern Christian theory and praxis. Roman Catholic, Anglican, and Protestant authors examine the central concerns of baptism and eucharist. The eclectic field brings together the visual and the verbal components of worship: paintings, buildings, textiles; creeds, prayers, and the words of proclamation. This is the final installment in a cycle of FAITH AND PRACTICE. The continuing catalogues in this cycle are Ecclesiology, Polity, and Canon Law; Ethics and Moral Theology; Mission, Ministry, and Vocation; Martyrology & Hagiography, Biography, and Testimony; Spirituality and Ascetical Theology. The chief pillar and cornerstone of the collection are the sacred scriptures of Judaism and Christianity. During the season of Pentecost 2005, we expanded our holdings and designed two catalogues for this component: Archeology of the Near East & Mediterranean, Biblical Languages & Criticism, and Scriptural Exegesis. 1. Interpreting the Hebrew Scriptures: The Archeology, Literature, and History of Israel and of the Ancient Near East 2. Interpreting the New Testament: The Archeology, Literature, and History of Early Christianity and of Imperial Rome. With their debut in the Fall 2004 season, these on-line catalogues comprise the three remaining pillars of the FOUNDATIONS IN DIVINITY: Biblical and Systematic Theology; History, History of Religion, and Church History; Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, and Philosophical Theology. The first installment in the ARTS AND LETTERS cycle, Literary Arts and the Written Word, features scholarship in the works of medieval and Renaissance England. Visual Arts and the Iconic Word marked the season of Epiphany 2005. Its complement, a distinguished catalogue in Architecture and the Language of Space, marked the celebration of Easter 2005. These second and third installments illustrate the formation and expansion of European Christendom, with rich offerings in the classical, early Christian, Byzantine, medieval, Renaissance, and Reformation periods. They also illumine seminal epochs of the Jewish and Christian traditions, from the second millennium B.C.E. to the first six hundred years of the Common Era. Within these catalogues you will find historical and archeological investigations into the cultures of Africa, the Near East, Greece, and the Balkans. Social Sciences, Sociology of Religion, and Theological Anthropology is the first installment for RELIGION AND SCIENTIFIC INQUIRY.
