Evergreen Montessori House
What Preschool Education Should Be

Our Mission
Evergreen Montessori House offers meaningful developmentally appropriate enriching play and learning experiences to enhance the child's potential for growth during the critical early childhood years. The program is tailored to meet each child's needs. Our goal is to enable a child to develop intellectually, socially, and culturally as a critical step on the journey to becoming a happy and capable adult.
The Montessori Method
It is no accident that our student makeup reflects all of the beautiful colors of our nation. It is our absolute belief that in our modern society that our children learn not only to co-exist, but to cherish each others differences. It is this very eclectic blending that makes us such a dynamic and successful country. We seek to develop awareness and respect of other cultures.
Education Methods
The Montessori methodologies are tried and tested with over nearly 100 years of development and refinement. Maria Montessori was the first woman to graduate as a Doctor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Rome. In 1907 she founded the Montessori movement with the opening of her first "Children's House" to provide preschool education to 40 children ages three to six. She pursued her belief that the early childhood years were of paramount importance in developing capable adults by spreading her concepts worldwide.
In 1929 the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) was established. AMI has developed the most rigorous and comprehensive standards of Montessori education. S.R. Swamy was trained at AMI by Dr. Montessori and her son. He headed all Indian Montessori courses. Gargi Das received her Montessori training under Mr. Swamy. In 1993 she and her husband Siddarth co-founded Evergreen Montessori House.
Standard activities are not forced upon children of a certain age group. We acknowledge that all children are different. At Evergreen Montessori House the ages of the children are mixed. This is due to the fact that children learn from each other socially and intellectually. Mixing the ages is a natural outcome of the family and environment we cultivate.
Classroom Materials
At Evergreen Montessori House we use a variety of educational tools and materials to inspire learning.
All of our Montessori tools are Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) approved. Most of our Montessori tools are imported from Italy and India. The school has invested several thousands of dollars in Montessori and traditional classroom tools.
Fun Classroom Activities
Evergreen Montessori House has created a wondrous fun-filled learning environment for the children. At Evergreen Montessori House, learning is our top priority without sacrificing fun!
Classroom Guest Visits/Lecturers
Every year our school arranges special events-from having a live show on animals to learning about insects and much more.
Benefits of a Preschool Education
Making the choice to send a first child to preschool is an emotional experience.
In a family with two working parents or a single working parent it can be a necessary ingredient in a child care mix. In other cases a stay at home parent or flexible work schedules make it an option to consider. While it may be a difficult decision to reach, it has many benefits. Before we go further I will attempt to draw a distinction between preschools and daycare. This can be murky since most day care centers do some education and preschools do day care.
A true preschool spends most of its class time on education, not entertainment.
It has a staff that is trained and oriented toward teaching children. Preschools are typically 2 hours and 30 minutes to 3 hours a day. They may have more school care or after school care and/or enrichment programs. Younger children may go 3 days a week, but I recommend 5 days a week for most children.
At Evergreen Montessori House, we go for 3 hours a day. On most days, 2 1/2 hours is academic. Young children naturally want to learn. During the longer days in most day care centers, the education component gets diluted if not completely lost.
The staff is charged with keeping the children happy, not measuring and planning their development. For this article we are referring to academically oriented preschools, not day care centers. A parent evaluating a day care center will have to make a careful selection to get all of the benefits mentioned in this article.
