Our contacts are extensive. Our instruments are gathered from many sources, including Sotheby's, Christies, and Phillips auction houses of London, as well as Skinner's of Boston. We work with other shops from around the country, private collectors and individual makers to fulfill the wide-ranging requests of our customers. We also appraise and broker collections.
Our services are comprehensive. We do repairs, fine restoration work, bow repair and rehairing, and appraisals. In addition we maintain the most complete and reliable rental program in the country. We stock an extensive selection of books, sheet music, Suzuki materials, cases and accessories, some exclusive to JSI, that can be purchased directly from our stores in Newton Centre and in Falmouth, Massachusetts, by mail, or the Internet. If you need anything for your violin, viola, cello, or bow, we have it! Our instruments are exceptional. We have a dedicated staff of professional players and violin makers that selects each and every violin, viola, cello and bow we offer. This means that everything from the construction of the instrument to the resonance of the E string is evaluated with careful, experienced eyes and ears. The members of our repair staff are all highly-trained craftspeople who have come to shopwork from various backgrounds, including art restoration, instrument making, and fine woodworking. With degrees from the Chicago School of Violin-making, Shanghai Conservatory and the North Bennett Street School, among other fine institutions, together they offer a combined professional experience of over sixty years, coupled with a unique blend of artistic sensitivity and technical knowledge. The Johnson repair staff functions as a cohesive unit which welcomes input from other restoration experts; this intermingling of shared knowledge has enabled Johnson's to reach the very highest repair standards. Our rental program is designed to benefit and accommodate students, teachers, and parents. It is our hope that acquiring an instrument will be a pleasant, relaxed, and positive experience.
