Used Sound started out in the 1970s as a local chain of stores, including locations in Davis Square, Harvard Square, and Newbury Street. While attending Sylvania Technical School (he graduated first in his class in 1978), Rockin' Bob Mahoney began working as a technician for the Newbury Street store. In 1981 Bob bought the Davis Square store, which until 2004 was the only Used Sound remaining in the Boston area.
In September 2001 Used Sound celebrated its 20th anniversary by renovating the store, adding to its guitar inventory. In 2004 Rockin Bob renamed the store Rockin Bob's Guitars.
