Two Opticians has roots going all the way back to the 1800îs, its ancestry can be traced back one hundred fifty years to RL Davis Optical. Then, around the turn of the twentieth century, Davis Optical became Gopen Optical - located on Kneeland Street in downtown Boston, it rose in status to become Bostonîs premier optical business. Eyeglasses are the most visible item a person wears; they make a definite statement about your appearance. |

Gopen Optical Staff Sidney Shwom acquired the Gopen business and retained the Gopen name. His son, Lenny Shwom, retired last year and decided to close the business. Two opticians working at Gopen Jim Barnes and Bernie Nania took their forty-five years of optician`s experience and opened Two Opticians.
The Shwom family has been very supportive of Two Opticians. Many of their customers have followed Jim and Bernie here to their location at 359 West Broadway, South Boston. They are welcome additions to the neighborhood, and here to stay.
Two Opticians have two goals: to service customers from Gopen Optical, and to develop a client base here in South Boston. They are full-service opticians, and are currently featuring a large array of well-known brands of sunglasses, including names like Gucci, Ray Ban, Prada, and Ralph Lauren.
Underlying the individual offerings at Two Opticians are their traditions of quality and service. Single vision eyeglasses are often in stock on a same-day basis. Eyeglasses with specialty lenses, which include bifocals, can be obtained in two or three days. And it is worth a trip to take a look at their selection of frames.
Both Jim and Bernie come from South Boston. Jim lived directly across West Broadway from Two Opticians, and Bernie was born on Gates Street. They went to South Boston High School and hung out together as teenagers. Later, Bernie would be the drummer and Jim the sound engineer for the popular local band Cat Tunes.
Jim began working at Gopen Optical in 1976; later on, Bernie joined him as an apprentice.
Both licensed opticians, they developed a loyal clientele over the years, which led them to consider opening their own shop. They self-financed Two Opticians, and with the blessings of the Shwom family, went into business for themselves Jim and Bernie`s chapter of the American dream.
