The Butcher Shop
A tribute to European boucheries, The Butcher Shop is both a neighborhood shop and a cozy wine bar serving hand made charcuterie, antipasti and bistro-inspired dishes. While the menu at No. 9 Park is a showcase of refined French and Italian cuisine, The Butcher Shop is a more personal love letter to Chef Lynch's sojourns in Europe; a place to have a glass (or bottle) of wonderful wine, perhaps a charcuterie plate of homemade morsels or something more substantial such as gnocchi with spicy sausage ragu. In the back, glass-front refrigerator cases are stocked with links of homemade sausages and hot dogs, jars of rich demi-glace, slabs of foie gras and exquisitely marbled cuts of beef. On a butcher block table are a selection of ever-changing accoutrements that might include jars of housemade preserves and chutneys and freshly baked brioche. A separate dairy case offers farm fresh eggs, unique cheeses and decadent treats such as black truffle butter. Classic European style meets modern urban simplicity at The Butcher Shop: Large windows allow diners to enjoy their wine and small plates while watching the bustling activity of the South End and make the intimate space feel more spacious. The sleek black soap stone bar is the focal point of the front section of The Butcher Shop, the blackboard walls behind display notes written in chalk about new wines that have arrived. The high ceiling is painted a rich red, providing a burst of warm color, and the wooden floor is worn but polished. While the front of the store is devoted to the immediate pleasures of eating and drinking, the back is for the gourmand who wishes to enjoy these delights at home. Gleaming glass cases display homemade terrines, fresh rabbit, several cuts of naturally raised beef, and ready-to-eat delicacies such as braised short ribs. The large butcher block, the resident butcher's workstation, displays a number of ever-changing and tempting items including house-pickled vegetables, Millissime artisanal vinegars and oils, and freshly baked breads.
