The Boston Renaissance Charter Public School
Renaissance utilized the Carnegie "school-within-a-school" model and houses three schools in one facility: the Kinder School, the Primary School, and the Elementary School. Each school is autonomous and managed by a Principal and an Instructional Leadership Team. Mission The Boston Renaissance Charter Public School is an urban K-6 school committed to providing a vibrant educational experience for Boston children. We strive to nurture and develop children academically, socially and emotionally, in a stimulating supportive environment. Vision The Boston Renaissance Charter Public School will be known as a school that provides a viable educational choice for Boston parents. By exposing students to a rigorous academic curriculum coupled with vibrant enrichment activities that include dance, fine arts, music, physical education and technology, Renaissance staff will collaborate to develop student confidence and character, and teach children to respect themselves and others, enabling them to become productive citizens in a 21st century global society. Educational Philosophy We believe that all children have the capacity to reach high levels of learning. We understand that each child is unique and we value diversity. We believe that our faculty and staff, our parents and the community at large have a responsibility to work cooperatively to create enriched learning experiences that will enable our children to reach their potential. Kinder School: Curriculum The focus of the Kindergarten curriculum includes oral language, alphabetic principal, phonemic awareness, beginning phonics, handwriting, vocabulary, and comprehension to build background knowledge. In addition to our well-rounded literacy curriculum, students are taught the skills necessary to become mathematical thinkers. Students also participate in a violence prevention/social emotional development program promoting positive citizenship. Primary School: Overview Young children come to school with a wide variety of experiences, which include developmental and cultural differences. The Boston Renaissance Charter School’s design for instruction and curriculum reflects and celebrates these diversities. The goals of the Primary School for SY 2008-2009 will consist of striving for the full development of every child through a rich, integrated, well-specified academic program in grades 1, 2 and 3. Our academic program allows for a school design that enables the Primary School to set specific goals for literacy and math instruction, namely having students perform at a proficient level in both reading and number fluency by the end of the third grade. The Primary School consists of 23 homeroom classrooms. Each grade level has an experienced Lead Teacher responsible for mentoring newer teachers and monitoring the grade-specific instructional program. Elementary School: Overview The Boston Renaissance Elementary School has approximately 290 students enrolled in grades 4 through 6. The Elementary School maintains a theoretical belief that reading is a complex process heavily involved with writing, listening, and speaking across all content areas. The primary goal in the Elementary School is to ensure all students become lifelong readers. It is our belief that students need to learn to think analytically, logically, and creatively. They need to integrate experience, knowledge, and understanding to form reasoned judgments, and to solve problems. Students work both independently and in cooperative teams to achieve this goal.
