Most Common Floor Types
Ceramic Tile- Ceramic tile is a clay-fired man made material. Surfaces made of glazed ceramic do not usually require any protective treatment. The glaze itself gives the material its own excellent protection against the absorption of dirt, as well as its unique artistic effect.
Porcelain Tile-A very hard material that is particularly resistant to chemical agents, scratches, freezing, and the absorption of water. It is best for paving floors in public places such as restaurants, airports, schools, hospitals and shopping centers.
Marble-Known as a calcium carbonate stone, is a metamorphic rock. It reacts to acids and gives a high-gloss appearance. Marble is acid-sensitive and scratches easily. Most marble stones have veins, swirls, and bands.
Slate-Slate is classified as a “rough” material with low absorption. Slate can be a problem because of its content of clay, especially in wet areas, and can develop efflorescence easily.
Terrazzo-The appearance of terrazzo is more consistent than most natural stones, The greatest advantage to Terrazzo is that it can be ground, honed, and polished just like marble and can be easily mistaken for granite.
Granite-Granite is an extremely hard natural stone , normally given a polished finish. Granite is scratch-resistant, as well.
Flagstone-Flagstone is the term given to almost all stone materials cut into thin, irregular shapes. Found frequently on foyer entrances, flagstone is commonly sandstone type.
Types of Grouts
Sanded- lime based cementation s grout is the most common. This is used for ceramic, porcelain, and Saltily. It yields a rough texture in most cases but is available in smoother textures depending on the grit size of the san used.
Un-sanded- base cementation s grout is less common and always used where the grout lines are very narrow such as in marble, travertine, and granite applications.
